Text Copyright

Each text on Sefaria varies slightly with regard to its copyright status, and its ability to be re-used in other projects. To learn how to check the copyright status of a text, check this article from the Sefaria Help Center.

⚠️ Note: Text Licenses on Sefaria

While you can use most of the resources on Sefaria for independent projects, some texts have specific licensing requirements. In order to be sure you’re reusing a source with the proper credits, you'll need to check the license or copyright status of the resource in question.

Please note:

Each version of a text has its own license. For example, the Tanakh translation by Dr. Everett Fox has a different copyright license than the Tanakh translation published in 2023 by JPS.

Different languages are considered individual editions of a text, each with individual license details.

Understanding Reuse Licenses

You’ll see three types of licenses when exploring the library.

  • Texts in the public domain can be reused without restriction.
  • Texts with a Creative Commons license may carry requirements to give attribution, share derived work, or limit usage in commercial contexts.
  • Texts with no noted license have not yet had their copyright status verified by Sefaria.

To check the status of a specific text:

  • Click on any passage of text to open the Resource Panel.
  • Click on About this Text to open a panel with background information about the text in question.
  • Underneath the title, background information, and (when available) date of composition, locate the Current Version subheading.
  • Underneath the details about the current version being displayed, locate information about the source of acquisition.

Usage of our Name and Logo

While we make our data and code available for others to reuse, the same is not true of the name "Sefaria" and our logo, which are under trademark. The reason for this to keep clear to users whether a particular application was developed by Sefaria or by a third party. We do offer the following badges below that you can use to indicate that your project is powered by Sefaria, though not developed by Sefaria.
